Having Trouble Sleeping? Tips for Getting a Good Night's Sleep

Modern day life is stressful, competitive and highly challenging. A large percentage of people today are stuck in a rat race, with so much to accomplish and such little time. Add to this our ever increasing fascination with social media and the hours spent surfing the net / interacting with friends on Facebook etc.

Constant changes in our lifestyle, work patterns, social and environmental factors as well as our own personal state of well being - each have a lasting impact on our internal clock. This is probably the reason why a majority of us are either sleep deprived or suffer from some form of sleep disorder.

Do You Find it Difficult to Fall Asleep at Night?

Do you toss and turn in bed for hours at a stretch without getting even a wink of peaceful sleep? Do you often wake up in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep? If yes, you are certainly not alone.

There are many people who suffer from such sleep related problems daily. The human body requires its share of rest & sleeping plays a big part in rejuvenating the body, extremely essential for good health. Spending sleepless nights or having disturbed sleep patterns can bring down a person's energy levels, make them irritable, tired, both physically & mentally and in the long run, affect their productivity.

Here are some simple tips that can help you to get a good night's sleep -

Behavioral Changes

1) Follow a Routine / Consistent Sleeping Pattern - The body has a tendency to acclamatise to regular behaviour patterns. Hence, it is important to follow a healthy lifestyle. Make it a routine habit to go to bed around the same time every night. Get at least 7-8 hrs of sleep and try not to compromise on your sleep.

2) Reduce Your Intake of Caffeine - a stimulant that can disturb your sleep and disrupt your sleeping patterns.

3) Remove Stress From Your Life - Try to lead a stress free life by practicing yoga, exercising and inculcating a positive outlook towards life. Worries and tensions often clog the mind, making it difficult to fall asleep.

4) Avoid Watching TV just before going to bed. Instead, opt for some light reading which should help you to go to sleep.

Physical Changes / Changes in Decor \

1) Invest in a Comfortable Pillow & Mattress - There are many kinds of pillows & mattresses available in the market - soft / medium / hard. Get yourself a pillow and mattress that is most comfortable for you.

2) Choose a Soothing Color for your Bedroom Walls - It is essential to be relaxed in one's bedroom and it is a good idea to paint your bedroom walls with a color that can help you to unwind and fall asleep. Light hues are preferred in contrast to dark, shocking shades.

3) Fix lights that can be turned down before finally going to sleep. Bright lights give an indication to the brain that it is still day time.

If you've been having trouble sleeping at night and have tried various options, it is best to consult a doctor.
