How to Enhance your Public Speaking Skills

If you’ve ever had to speak publically in front of a group of people, you would know how nerve-racking the whole experience can be! Some of the most confident individuals get butterflies in their stomach when it comes to public speaking.

Let’s face the facts – given the current work environment in which working professionals have to often make presentations in front of their peers and department heads as well as discuss future plans with the entire work staff, it is difficult to completely avoid making presentations and talk in front of audiences.

Instead of running away from the inevitable, it is best to face your fears head on. As difficult as it may seem, the best way to improve your public speaking skills is by doing it again and again. As you become more experienced through regular practice, you will slowly learn to let go of your fears and become more comfortable when speaking on stage.

Let us take a look at some of the most important points you should remember while making your next public presentation –

1. Be Positive – Learn to keep a positive outlook towards life and you will see the difference it makes to all your honest efforts. Visualise yourself speaking with poise and confidence and chances are, you will do much better than you had even imagined!

2. Be Prepared – Prepare yourself well before making your presentation by familiarising yourself with the content matter. This will help you gain further confidence and help you to feel relaxed. In addition, visit the room / stage where you will be speaking. This should put you at ease and give you a chance to picture yourself speaking confidently in front of your audience.

3. Relax Your Mind & Body – This is perhaps the most important step you can take to make your public speaking experience a success. Just before taking the plunge, sit down in a quiet corner and take slow, deep breaths to relax your mind and body. Put all your worries aside and focus only on doing well.

4. Communicate Well – Your audience is waiting to hear what you have to say. Don’t disappoint them. Make sure to speak clearly without eating your words. Modulate your voice well so that your words leave an impact on your listeners. Make sure that the person sitting in the last row can hear what you’re saying without having to strain. If possible, practice voice modulation before hand by making a friend or colleague sit across the room and make sure that he / she can hear you clearly.

5. Connect with your Audience and be Open – While speaking to your audience, look at them and maintain eye contact instead of looking only at your papers or written material.

This will help you to connect with them and keep their interest levels high. Maintain your enthusiasm and be willing to answer questions and clear doubts.

Just like most other things in life, public speaking is an exercise which requires regular practice and motivation to succeed and do well.
