Freelance
Writers Needed
Date:
2006-05-19
Catalyst is a newsprint magazine serving as Salt Lake City’s
resource for creative living. We’re looking to cultivate a
group of freelance writers, both to take story assignments
from our editor as well as to present us with stories and
story ideas. As most of our stories have a heavily local focus,
we are mostly looking for writers that live in or around the
Salt Lake City area. If you feel that you have some
ideas that are applicable to us and you live outside of SLC/Utah,
we are happy to take a look at your submissions.
Specifically, we’re looking for people interesting in writing about a wide
variety of topics, including:
* Arts * Environmental Issues * Sustainability * Progressive
Politics
* Health * Spirituality * Healthy/Organic Food * Transportation
(alternative, etc.) * Gardening
This list is not comprehensive, but for the most part is what we need at
the moment. Please indicate which subjects you would be interested and
willing to write about.
We are looking for writers who are flexible, have good research
and interviewing skills and can meet deadlines.
Writer’s Guidelines:
Catalyst advocates a healthy, peaceful, sane environment—locally and
globally. The enemy in the quest to attain this goal is not a person or
nation, but rather lack of information and insight. Catalyst’s role is to
present our readers with the best information available in a fashion that
inspires the reader to act—along with suggestions as to how, when and
where. In other words, the purpose of Catalyst is to be a catalyst.
Style and Length: The Catalyst style is friendly and to the point.
We value fresh ideas and thoughtful reporting: captivating leads, solid
research (and original research, if possible), well chosen quotes,
anecdotes, description and satisfying conclusions. Please familiarize
yourself with the publication by carefully reading past issues.
While many of our stories are of a chatty or informal tone, we are not
looking for opinion or experiential pieces, except from well-experienced
writers, and probably only then by request.
Feature stories: Our feature stories generally run 2,000-4,500
words. We use two or three per issue. A shorter story with several
sidebars is preferred over a longer story.
Shorts & Occasionals: These smaller stories usually run between
600-1500 words and are usually less formal, often about interesting things
happening around town.
Title: Assign your story a working title. It helps keep your story
focused as you write. It may or may not be the title used for publication.
Biographical Note: Conclude your story with one or two sentences,
third person, about yourself. If you have an expertise or affiliation
associated with the story subject matter, please mention it.
Editing: All articles are edited. You may be asked to revise or
expand upon portions of your piece, or review the copy if editing has been
extensive.
Rights: Catalyst buys first serial rights. If you would like to
have your article reprinted elsewhere, please inform the editor.
Manuscript Presentation (electronic submissions only): Proof your
copy for typos, misspellings, and to double-check facts. Include phone
number and address on first page of story. It’s also sometimes helpful to
include phone numbers of major interviewees. We accept submission of
stories by email only. We can use Microsoft format, but save to RTF or
“text only” if using WordPerfect or another word processing program.
Please single space, no hard returns at the end of lines. Make only one
space between sentences (not the two they taught you in typing class).
Please do not indent paragraphs.
