Evason
Phuket Receives Responsible Tourism Award – Best in Asia
Six
Senses Bangkok Hub – November 2006
Evason Phuket has received Wild Asia’s Responsible Tourism Award in
the category of luxury-boutique Resorts & Hotels. Winners were
short-listed from a pool of operators that used Wild Asia’s Responsible
Tourism Self- Assessment tool, and were then further evaluated by an
on-site visit from the organisation’s team members.
A special award presentation, with support from the British Government’s
Global Opportunities Fund and the Langkawi Development Authority was held
on November 12, 2006 and was attended by the British Deputy High
Commissioner, Mr. Patrick Moody. “Tourism is an important industry in many
countries in Asia, adopting a sustainable approach that addresses the
risks of over-development, pollution and environmental degradation will
help ensure its long term survival”, Mr. Moody was reported as saying.
“Sustainable Tourism also offers a way to ensure that local populations
enjoy real benefits from tourism”, he added.
Wild Asia, a Malaysian-based conservation think-tank recently announced
this years Responsible Tourism Award winners. The responsible tourism
Award seeks to identify tourism operators in Asia – from luxury resorts to
small or community-based eco-ventures – that demonstrate a high degree of
commitment towards respecting local cultures, benefiting local economies
and achieving low environmental impacts. A special destination award
rewards more local efforts within important tourism destinations.
Evason Phuket was proud to share the stage with runners-up to this award.
They were Alila Manggis and Alila Ubud – both located in Bali, Indonesia.
