Jennifer Adkins: Base Work From Home Around Your Talents
|
|
Last week, I
promised to give advice to moms and others who were looking for ways to
work from home.
First, I'll tell you what NOT to do: Don't bother with an Internet
search on "work from home." You'll get thousands of scams and possibly
a few legitimate businesses, but it wouldn't be worth the effort to find
the legit ones.
If you really want to avoid scams and be happy working from home, work
for the one person who truly has our best interests at heart: You.
|
-
Start by
figuring out what kind of work you want to do by focusing on your unique
interests and abilities. Everyone has some special talents or skills --
the trick is figuring out how to make money from them.
-
What are you
good at? Drawing or painting? Cooking? Sewing? Carpentry? Photography?
Working with kids or animals? Do you play a musical instrument or
speak a foreign language? Do you have a degree or special expertise
in any subject? Could you take a class or two if needed to develop your
talent or interest?
-
I got started
writing my column when I saw a brief article in The Herald-Dispatch
asking for freelance writers. I have a bachelor's and a master's
degree in English, I love to write, and I have kids. Why not try a
parenting column? I wrote a few samples and sent them to the editor, and
I'm doing it almost three years later. I also spend 10 to 15 hours a week
editing and typesetting for small publishers. But I didn't find my clients
by searching online. I
started by looking in the Huntington yellow pages for publisher (there
weren't many) and called to offer my services. One eventually hired me,
then later referred me to a publisher in Texas, whom I now work for as
well.
|
|
These jobs
have been a great fit for my interests and skills. I love the flexibility
and portability of the work.
But when you have small children, "flexibility" sometimes means working
when you can, not necessarily when you want to.
|
Some days, I don't get started until 9 p.m., when the kids are in
bed. I'd rather chill out in front of the TV or go to bed myself, but it's
the tradeoff I make to get to work from home.
Next week, I'll go into more detail about how to make money from your
unique talents and interests.
