Review - Mother Earth, Dr. Mahashweta
Chaturvedi
Mother Earth :
UJJWAL PRESS, BAREILLY, 2005, Rs 100
Dr.
Mahashweta Chaturvedi is one of the brightest star in the firmament of
Indian English Literature.
She is continuously
writing in English, Hindi and Sanskrit. Mother –Earth is her 9th
collection of poems in English. In the preface of this collection Dr.
Mahashweta writes "Mother – Earth wants for progeny to live in peace by
singing the songs of love and universal brotherhood."
There are fifty poems in
this volume. Dr Mahashweta Chaturvedi obverses "My main intention in
composing these poems is to inspire man to hear the call of love and peace
of his mother – earth. The right minded people should not suffer from the
sins, the hatred and the avarice committed by others. The total atmosphere
should be of fearlessness from all sides and from all people whether known
or unknown and whether friends or foes. [ Atharva Veda19/15/5-6]
Dr. Charturvedi salutes
mother earth in the first poem "Mother Earth"
"O Earth, you are my
Mother, I am your daughter or son,
We are enjoying, The battle you have won"
Dr. Chaturvedi also
presents herself as champion of nature. She presents Wordsworthian spirit
in such poems as `The Crown Of Nature, Garden, Two Birds, Taking the
Roses, Sweet Earth`
"Two birds are sitting, On
a fruitful tree,
With sparkling feathers, Appear very free,
Attractive and wonderful"
Dr. Mahashweta also raises
contemporary issues of Kashmir and Roop Kanwar and also forces us to think
upon these issues.
Such poems as "Forget
Kashmir, In the century of Roop Kanwar" are brooding in nature.
"Leaving the long
suffocated life, She has gone away,
To some unknown region, The bubbling cries of children"
[ In the century of
Roop Kanwar]
Dr. Mahashweta also raises
the issues of women's emancipation and empowerment in such poems as "The
Century Of Women, Alone on the road"
"Alone, alone on the road
Inside confidence like road,
Your steps round off the stories, Appearing often changing the tones"
[ Alone on the Road]
Dr. Mahashweta presents
William Blake's type mysticism in these poems entitled "Invitation to
vigor, Establishing his kingdom, The collective power, Blissful Divinity"
" Our Lord, Is blissful
Divinity, The creator of the universe,
The disposer, The known of all the world"
[ Blissful Divinity]
The poetess also provides
us the preaching of peace and brotherhood in such poems as "To live in
peace, Be Calm, The seed of peace on earth"
"Peace is in the heavenly
region, The song of peace sings the pigeon,
Peace is in the mid region, Peace is precious procession"
Dr. Mahashweta has filled
this volume with such diverse theme that this volume has become unique in
itself. The author has also presented thirty haikus with diverse themes.
The foremost aim for Dr.
Mahashweta looks that there should be shanty all around in this world. In
the present chaos this volume showers peace and satisfaction.
"We hear your richa, Where
you say, Let there be Shanti,
Shanti in the heaven``
[ Mother Earth]
This volume has become a
must read for every avid reader and the price of this volume is
reasonable.
In the end I can say
that Dr. Mahashweta Chaturvedi is successful in her mission bringing peace
and charity upon this earth.
